Introduction to Avocado Production, August 2019
“In 2019, in addition to my qualifications, I also completed the Avocado Production course with ACI. The course was helpful in my job because I needed crop-specific knowledge as we have avocados on the farm.
I chose online learning because my job is very demanding; I barely have time for anything else. With online learning it is easier to learn and complete assignments because I am given more than enough time to complete an assignment and go through my study material.
I am most passionate about research and sustainability. I believe that in order for us to produce food and provide food security globally, we need to do a lot of research in order to find ways of doing it while minimizing the negative effects it may have on Mother Nature. Conventional agriculture has a lot of negative effects on the planet, there is a lot of soil degradation happening which has resulted in a huge amount of land being unsuitable for certain agricultural practices or certain crops. This means that we are compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs while we meet our present needs.
The three most important lessons I’ve learned since starting a career in Agriculture are as follows:
- In order to survive and thrive in Agriculture it is important that you are passionate about agriculture because it is a very difficult and demanding industry, but if you have the passion for it you will thrive.
- It is very challenging for a young black woman like me; however, I learned to be tough and strong within the first few months.
- Agriculture is like Medicine, you need to keep reading in order to stay informed and keep up with any new technological developments, pests or diseases, etc.”
